EPIPHANY, by Joseph Vasinda

Epiphany is part of a larger series called Psalms and Meditations, which is being written as a part of Vasinda’s dissertation. It focuses single-mindedly on the performer’s experience and the physical sensation of generating sound as a means of meditation and relaxation.

Joseph Vasinda was born in 1995 near Dallas, Texas. His focus in life is creating moments for others to express themselves, both as a teacher and as a composer. His focus in music composition centers around aspects of performance including improvisation and the physicality of performance, keeping the person or people playing the music in his mind constantly. He continues to play in order to build his own personal musical language, and to keep a stronger connection with other performers and the music itself.

BREATHE DEEPLY, by Drew Farrar

Drew Farrar is a composer, guitarist, and improviser currently based in Champaign Illinois. Farrar has performed with Adam Shead’s Adiaphora Orchestra, Matthew Miller’s Avant-Gardians, the Illinois Modern Ensemble, and COLAB. His works have been performed at the 21st Century Guitar Festival, ROCC Conference, 2019 NASA conference, and he was selected to New Music on the Point in 2020. Since 2021 Farrar has served as the director of New Music Mosaic. Farrar earned MMs in composition (2020) and guitar (2022) from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

I am a Senior Researcher at the Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies, University of Jyväskylä, Finland and engaged in arts-based inquiry. I am interested in pedagogies of listening, sound art, transformative and creative research practices as well as disability studies and environmental humanities.

John Grzinich (US/Estonia) has worked since the early 1990s as an artist and cultural coordinator with various practices combining sound, moving image, site-specificity, and collaborative social structures. He is currently a visiting Associate Professor of New Media in the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Estonian Academy of Arts.

PLANTING A SEED, by Shelley Burgon

Shelley Burgon is a harpist, composer and sound artist, specializing in experimental music. She has an extensive history as an improvisor and an interpreter new classical music; performing the works of composers such as Pauline Oliveros, Anthony Braxton, Yoko Ono, James Tenney, Berio and Bjork. Her music has been commissioned by The Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Ne(x)tworks, and multimedia artist Katherine Behar. Shelley received her MFA in Electronic Music from Mills College where she studied with Pauline Oliveros, Maryanne Amacher, Fred Frith and Alvin Curran.

LOVE SONG TO THE OCEAN, by Livia Schweizer

The idea for this little simple score came last December, from a beach in West Africa. The Ocean every morning was bringing to the sunlight on the beach a countless amount of seashells. Each walk on the beach I could not resist the temptation to put few of them in my pocket. Every shell has its own shape, some are beautifully showing on the surface how the erosion changed their shape. Shells are a beautiful reminder of the passing time and of the transformation of things. Every shell makes its own sound and this is a love song for the seashells, and from them.

Livia Schweizer is a flutist, improvisor, educator and curious listener. Born and raised in Italy, she is now based in Helsinki. At the moment Livia is especially interested in how improvisation and new and ‘non-conventional’ scores can be a medium to encourage interdisciplinary connections and create intercultural dialogue. She is member of the new music group Earth Ears Ensemble, and as improviser she is member of the E.C.I.O. and of the Helsinki based Septad-ensemble. Livia has a master in flute from Sibelius Academy and she studied as exchange student in 2019 at USC in Los Angeles. Hummingbirds, seashells, and old stories are among her favorite things, and in the free time she walks a lot around with her dog, Nina.
