PRESCRIPTION FOR LISTENING, by STEPHANIE LOVELESS

Stephanie Loveless is a sound and media artist whose research centers on listening and vocal embodiment. Her recent projects include a mobile web-app for geo-located listening, and sound works that channel the voices of plants, animals, and musical divas. Loveless’ sound, video and performance work has been presented widely in festivals, galleries, museums and artist-run centres in North America, South America, Europe and the Middle East. She currently lives and works in upstate New York where she is a Lecturer at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the Department of Arts, and Director of the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer.

MINDFUL EXERCISES FOR THE ANTI-COMPOSER – 1, by Asli Kobaner

This exercise is for anyone who declares themselves as a composer; who hates any self-declaration as a composer; who feels like a composer; who hates a composer; who makes a living as a composer; who makes a composer; who makes noises like a composer; who eats, breaths, sleeps, dreams and drinks like a composer; sometimes, from time to time, or all-the-time.

Aslı Kobaner is a composer-improviser and sound artist. Their research and work investigate concepts of noise, affect, embodiment, crossculturality, creativity in the context of improvisation/noise activities, Metal Studies, contemporary art music and queer studies. They studied composition. They have released several albums including klank.ist and experimental hardcore/metal bands. They worked on short movie soundtracks, commissions for contemporary ensembles, video games and multimedia participating various festivals and galleries, both intrastate and abroad. They are a PhD Candidate at MIAM.

West Collingswood Walking Meditation, by Matthew Lee Knowles

Originally from Philadelphia, Nathan Watts currently lives in Frankfurt am Main. As a cellist, he is always searching for ways to keep contemporary music and improvisation current and accessible through diverse programming and collaboration. He is a member of the GROW quartet, trio Namiro, Ensemble Tempus Konnex, and the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Leaders. Nathan holds a Bachelor of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music with Stephen Geber, a Master of Music at Rice University with Desmond Hoebig, and a Masters from the International Ensemble Modern Academy at the HfMDK, Frankfurt.

IMAGINARY LISTENING IV, by Mike Bullock

From a group of improviser’s études written for Pauline’s Deep Listening class at RPI when I was a PhD candidate there.

Mike Bullock is a composer, performer, and environmental sound recordist based in rural Massachusetts. He has been creating electroacoustic and improvised music since the mid 90s, and has performed across the US and in Europe. Bullock has received grants from the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. As Ears In Space, he also designs and builds wave field synthesis and other spatial audio arrays.

BREATHFULLY, by JP Seabright

Inspired by the visual and graphic scores of John Cage and film work of Oskar Fischinger, this score is a ‘found piece’ that invites the performer to create music/sound in response to the images and their state of mind at that moment in time.

SOUND IMMEDIACY/INTIMACY, by Jaime D. Rojas Vargas

Jaime D. Rojas Vargas is a Colombian based composer living and working in Brazil. He is currently finishing his PHD thesis which consist in creating a soundmap of the Iguazu River in the state of Paraná. He taught sound for 8 years at the Aesthetics Department at Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia and for two years at EMMAT a music school also in Bogotá. His creations has been exhibited and performed in New York City, Brazil, Colombia, Spain and online. His desires are to re frame our cultural, geopolitical, environmental, cosmological and social interactions throough his works..

Jasmine Thomasian (they/them) is a Chicago-based composer (collaborator, educator, dog parent, listener) passionate about sound, identity formation, and the interpersonal dynamics of Western art music. Jasmine’s artistic output spans a range of musical aesthetics, with each piece forming around a core question or musical object and often incorporating theatrics, extended techniques, and mundane texts or objects. Jasmine is currently pursuing a PhD in Composition and Music Technology at Northwestern University.).
