Lisa Schonberg is a composer and percussionist creating sound works based on ecological research. Informed by her background in entomology, she is interested how sound work can reveal and challenge assumptions about insect sound-worlds and insect agency. She has been collaborating with Brazilian entomologists on ATTA (Amplifying the Tropical Ants), a project investigating ant bioacoustics in the Amazon. Other recent work includes work on old-growth forests in Oregon and endangered Hawaiian bees. She is pursuing her PhD in Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Emma Bolland is artist and writer employing experimental approaches to inter-genre / interdisciplinary writing, speaking, reading, and making. This includes an investigation of the problematics and ambiguities of an expanded understanding of translation—between languages and language codes, and between voice, ear, and page. Other mediums include drawing and other works on paper, moving-image, performance, collaborations, and events. They are interested in the wider politics of communication, and the conflicts between medical and social models of disability.

This score was written during a stay at the SÍM artist residency in Reykjavík, Iceland, in March 2020 as a part of Tina Mariane Krogh Madsen’s project Listening Scores [Reykjavík].

Tina Mariane Krogh Madsen is an artist and researcher who works in the intersection between performance art, sound, open technology, and matter. Madsen is currently a doctoral candidate at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture (FI), researching environmental performance art and affective relations in the context of climate change. Madsen is the founder and curator of performance protocols, a nomadic platform for instruction-based art and collaborative processes, and a certified Deep Listening facilitator from the Center for Deep Listening, Rensselaer Polytech Institute (US).

Matthew Ariaratnam is an interdisciplinary sound artist, composer, guitarist, and listener based on the unceded traditional territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations – also known as Vancouver, BC. He creates sensory walks, writes dumbpop and chamber music, and frequently collaborates with choreographers, visual artists, and theatre-makers.

Allie E.S. Wist is an artist-scholar currently working on an Arts PhD from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a focus on sensory futures, food, and the Anthropocene. Her work encompasses photography, radio broadcasts, artifacts, dinners, and writing that render temporality and futures accessible through material and sensory narratives. She has an MA in Food Studies from New York University and a BA in Media from Boston University. Her artwork has been exhibited with Honolulu Biennial, The Wellcome Collection, and HESSE FLATOW, and she has taught at NYU and The New School.

FROM THE MIDDLE OF A CLEARING, BY HOLLAND HOPSON

Holland Hopson is a sound and media artist, composer and improviser. A multi-instrumentalist, he usually performs on clawhammer banjo and electronics. Holland often augments his instruments with custom-designed sensor interfaces and performs with his own highly responsive, interactive computer programs. His media art has been exhibited in the US, UK and Korea and is in the collections of the University of Washington and RISD, among others. Holland’s most recent recording is a collaboration with poet Hank Lazer: field recordings of mind in morning.

Heloise Gold is a dancer, performing artist, choreographer, and T’ai Chi/Qi Gong instructor.
She has been the ‘movement keeper’ for the Deep Listening Community for the past 30 years. She has developed the curriculum for the Deeply Listening Body work including the Online Certification program, and has facilitated DL Retreats, alongside Pauline and Ione since their inception in 1991. She continues to co- facilitate DL Retreats.

Chad Eby creates work—by turns stark and whimsical—that explores humanity’s fraught relationship with made objects and technological processes. A Lexington Kentucky-based artist, designer and educator working with light, sound & code to engage with the grain of digital technologies. Part of the faculty of University of Kentucky’s School of Art and Visual Studies since 2019, Chad’s work has been shown at the Tekniska Museet in Stockholm, Generative Art XXII in Rome, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Columbia College Center for Book and Paper and various local venues across the U.S.
